Let AB be the chord of the larger circle which is tangent to the smaller circle at point P.

Joining OA,OB and OP

OA=OB=5cm

OP=4cm

We know that tangent is perpendicular to the radius.

OPAB

OPA=OPB=90o

In right-angled OAP

OA2=OP2+AP2 [ By Pythagoras theorem ]

(5)2=(4)2+AP2

25=16+AP2

AP2=9

AP=3cm

In right-angled OPB

OB2=OP2+BP2

52=42+BP2

25=16+BP2

BP2=9

BP=3cm

AB=AP+PB

=3+3

=6cm
