Question

If solution sets of P and Q are shown by two separate number line

(i) Write down the set-builder form of P and Q

(ii) Represent each of the following sets on different number lines: (a) PQ, (b) PQ, (c) P'Q

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: (i) Evaluate the set-builder form of P and Q from given number lines

Set-builder form for P={x:-2x<6,xR}

Set-builder form for Q={x:-6<x<4,xR}

Step 2: (ii) (a) Evaluate PQ and represent on number line

PQ={x:-6<x<6,xR}

(b) Evaluate PQ and represent on number line

PQ={x:-2x<4,xR}

(c) Evaluate P'Q and represent on number line

P'Q=Q-PP'Q={x:-6x<-2,xR}

Thus the set-builder form of P={x:-2x<6,xR} and Q={x:-6<x<4,xR}
