Let us first draw a right ABC right angled at B and A=θ.
Given: tan θ = 3
But tan θ = BCAB
So, BCAB = 31
Thus, BC = 3k and AB = k


Using Pythagoras theorem, we get:
AC2 = AB2 + BC2
⇒ AC2 = (3 k)2 + (k)2
⇒ AC2= 4k2
⇒ AC = 2k
∴ sec θ = ACAB = 2kk = 21
