Question

If the azimuthal quantum number of an electron is 2 then the shape of the orbital is ______

Open in App
Solution

  1. Azimuthal quantum number (l) tells about the type of orbital.
  2. For l = 0, orbitals is s; For l = 1, orbitals is p; For l = 2, orbitals is d.
  3. Thus, it is for 'd'orbital the value of the azimuthal quantum number is found to be 2.
  4. The shape of 'd' orbitals is double dumbbell or cloverleaf shaped and all of the five 'd'have equal energy. They are called degenerate orbitals.

Hence, If the azimuthal quantum number of an electron is 2 then the shape of the orbital is a double dumbbell.
