Question

If the boiling point of oxygen, argon and nitrogen are -183 C , -186 C and -196 C, which gas forms the liquid first as the air is cooled? Explain the process.

Solution

oxygen becomes liquid first out of three then argon and then nitrogen.

this is so because nitrogen has the lowest boiling point out of the three…then comes argon and then oxygen….

this actually means that the least compression and cooling required to turn gas into liquid is for oxygen

gases which have high boiling point can be compressed easily to give liquid form than those which have low boiling point.

The change of a gas or vapor to a liquid by cooling is called condensation
