Question

If the coordinates of the foot of the perpendicular drawn from the point (1,2) on the line y=2x+1 is (α,β), then the value of |α+β| is

Open in App
Solution

Let M be the foot of perpendicular drawn from the P(1,2) to y=2x+1
The equation of a line perpendicular to y=2x+1 is given by
x+2y+λ=0 ...(1)
This passes through P(1,2).

So,
14+λ=0λ=3
On putting in equation (1), we get x+2y+3=0
Point M is the point of intersection of 2xy+1=0 and x+2y+3=0.
Solving these equations, we get
x=1, y=1
Therefore, the coordinates of the foot of perpendicular are (1,1)

Hence, the value of |α+β|=|2|=2
