Solution

The correct option is D A>2C

The light entering the prism at surface AB, will not be able to come out from the surface AC, if total internal reflection (TIR) takes place at this surface.

As TIR takes place at surface AC

(r2)min>C

Since r1+r2=A

r2=Ar1

(r2)min=A(r1)max (1)

But (r1)max is possible when incident angle is maximum imax=90
i.e., incident ray grazes the interface AB.

Now, applying Snell's Law at AB,

1×sin i=μsin r1

sin(90)=μsinr1

r1=sin(1)(1μ)

r1=C (2)

From equations (1) and (2), we get

r1+r2>2C (3)

Since, r1+r2=A

Therefore, the condition becomes

A>2C
