Given: equations x2+ax+b=0 and x2+bx+a=0 having a common root
To find the value of a+b
Sol: Let the common root be α
now, α2+aα+b=0....(i)
and α2+bα+a=0....(ii)
By (i)-(ii), we get
aαbα+ba=0α(ab)=(ab)α=1
Put the value of α in any of the given two equations we get
12+a(1)+b=0a+b=1
