If the function f(x) given by f(x)=3ax+bifx>111ifx=15ax2bifx<1 is continuous at x=1, then find the values of a and b.

Open in App
Solution

Here, f(x)=3ax+bifx>111ifx=15ax2bifx<1

Now RHL, limx1+3ax+b

limh03a(1+h)+b
=3a+b

Again, LHL , limx15ax2b
limh05a(1h)2b
=5a2b

Now, RHL = LHL =11
3a+b=11........(i) ×2
5a2b=11.......(ii) ×1

6a+2b=22
5a2b=11
_____________
11a=33

a=3
3×3+b=11
b=119=2
a=3, b=2
