Solution

Instructions:
  • It is a straight forward question.
Solution:
The presence of the Himalayas in the northern frontier affects the climate of the Indian subcontinent quite significantly in various ways.

During severe winters, the Himalayas act as barriers from the cold winds of central Asia and thereby protecting the great plains of India from severe cold weather from occurring.

If not for the Himalayas, regions that are beyond the Western Ghats of India would have remained drier. That is because the Himalayas are the reason for the summer rains and monsoon types of climate in these regions.

The Himalayas also have a huge role in supporting agriculture in the northern plain regions. The Himalayas provides year-round water supplies for irrigation through the rivers originating from it. The Himalayan rivers have a perennial flow since these are fed by the glaciers and bring a lot of silt, making these plains very fertile.
