Question

If the length of body diagonal for CsCl, which crystallises into a cubic structure with Cl ions at the corners and Cs+ ions at the centre of unit cell is 7˚A and the radius of Cs+ ion is 1.69˚A. The radius of Cl ion?

Solution

CsCl is BCC structure.

So, in BCC structure atoms touch along the body diagonal i.e.,
2(r Cl+rCs+)=7

2rCl=72r Cs+=7(3.38)=3.62A°

rCl=3.622=1.81A°
