Question

If the lines y=3x+1 and 2y=x+3 are equally inclined to the line y=mx+4. Find the values of m.

Open in App
Solution

Let θ be the acute angle which the line y=mx+4 makes with the lines y=3x+1 and 2y=x+3. Then,
tanθ=|m31+3m|

tanθ=|m121+m2|

|m31+3m|=|2m1m+2|

m33m+1=±2m1m+2

m2m6=±(6m2m1)
5m2+5=0 or 7m22m7=0

7m22m7=0m=1±527
