Question

If the materials used for constructing a building were good conductors, do you think lightning will strike the building? Will the lightning conductor be still required to be installed in the building?

Solution

Lightning conductor

  1. A lightning rod and its ground associated conductors provide enough protection.
  2. They divert or mislead the current from non-conducting parts to conducting parts of the structure.
  3. Thereby allowing current to follow the path of minimum resistance and pass through the rod and its cables without harming the main structure.
  4. Any lightning that strikes, will fall on the building’s entire surface.
  5. There is no need for a lightning conductor because the conducting material will do all of the operations of a lightning conductor.
  6. The conductors don't allow charge separation and lightning will not harm the building.

Hence, there is no need for the lightning conductor in the building which is made up of good conductor materials.
