Solution

The first n natural numbers are 1, 2, 3, ..., n.

This forms an AP with a = 1 and d = 1.

Sum of first n natural numbers = 1 + 2 + 3 + ... + n = n21+n=nn+12 Sn=n2a+l

∴ Mean of first n natural numbers = Sum of first n natural numbersn=nn+12n=n+12

Now,

n+12=20 Givenn+1=40n=40-1=39

If the mean of first n natural numbers is 20, then n = _____39_____.
