Since $x + 3, 2 x + 1$ and $x - 7$ are in A.P., thus,
$(x + 3) + (x - 7) = 2 (2 x + 1)$
$2 x - 4 = 4 x + 2$
$\Rightarrow 2 x = - 6$
$\Rightarrow x = \frac{- 6}{2} = - 3$
