Question

If the pair of line given by ax2+2hxy+by2=0 are rotated through origin about 90, then find combined equation of their equation in the new position.

Open in App
Solution

Let the lines be represented by the equation ax2+2hxy+by2=0 be y=m1x.....(1) and y=m2x.....(2).

Where, m1+m2=2hb.....(3) and m1.m2=ab......(4)

Now the lines perpendicular to the lines (1) and (2) respectively be,
y=xm1 and y=xm2.

So the pair of lines represented by them is,
(y+xm1)(y+xm2)=0

or, y2+m1+m2m1.m2xy+x2m1.m2=0
or, ay22hxy+bx2=0 [ Using (3) and (4)]
