Question

If the point P(4,2) is one end of the focal chord PQ of the parabola y2=x, then the slope of the tangent at Q is

Open in App
Solution

For the given parabola y2=x,
the value of a=14
Hence any point on the parabola will be (t24,t2)
Given P(4,2)
Comparing it with parametric coordinates, we get
t=4

Now, using the focal chord property,
Coordinates of Q(14t2,12t)
Q(164,18)
Equation of tangent will be
y8=12(x+164)
Hence, required slope will be 4.
