Question

If the radius of a metal atom is 2.00 A and its crystal structure is fcc lattice, what is the volume (in cm3) of one unit cell?

Open in App
Solution

For a fcc lattice:

Along the face diagonal
2×a=4×r
where
a is ledge length of unit cell
r is the radius of the atom=2.00 A=2×108 cm

a=22r

Volume (V) of a unit cell is given by:

V=a3=(22r)3V=162r3=16×2×(2×108)3V=1.81×1022 cm3
