Question

If the sound level in a room is increased from 50dB to 60dB, by what factor is the pressure amplitude increased?

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Sound level in a room is increased from 50dB to 60dB

Step 2: To find

Increase in the amplitude of pressure

Step 3: Calculation

As we know

β=10logII0I0=10-12Wm-2

where I is intensity

When β=50dB,

50=10logI110-125=logI110-12105=I110-12I1=10-7

When β=60dB,

60=10logI210-126=logI210-12106=I210-12I2=10-6

We know,

IP2

where P is pressure

I1I2=P12P2210-710-6=P12P2210=P2P12P2=10P1

Hence, if the sound level increases from 50dB to 60dB their pressure amplitudes get 10 times the original value.
