Question

If the voltage supply to an appliance is reduced to half of its voltage rating, what would be the effect on the power consumed by it?

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Power is directly proportional to the square of the voltage and inversely proportional to resistance.

Here resistance would be the same for both cases which is R.

Step 2: Formula used when voltage is V1

Power (P1) of the appliance when voltage V1 is supplied

P1=(V1)2R

Step 3: Formula used when voltage is V2

Power (P2) of the appliance when voltage V2 is supplied

P2=(V2)2R

Step 3: Calculation

Calculating P1P2, on putting all the values we have,

P1P2=(V1)2R(V2)2R=(V1V2)2

According to the question, V2=V12

Thus, V2V1=12

Now calculating P2P1, we will have

P2P1=(V2V1)2=(12)2=14

Hence, If the voltage supply to an appliance is reduced to half of its voltage rating, then the power consumed by it will become one-fourth.
