12167 = 12(group 1) 167(group 2)

The units place of second group i.e. 167 is 7 so the unit place of the cube root will be 3

Now 12 lies between 8 and 27 i.e $2^3$ and $3^3$

The smaller of these two being 2, the cube root should be 23.
