Question

If the water molecules in 1.0 g of water were distributes uniformly over the surface of earth, If there are 6.5×10xsuch molecules would there be in 1.0cm2 of earth's surface , then what is the value of x?

Solution

Number of water molecules in one gram of water is

N=118NA=6.022X102318=3.35X1022

Distributing them evenly over the surface of earth (R=6400km) gives areal density

ρ=NA=N4πR2=3.35X10224(3.142)(6400000002)=6500

Thus, molecules in unit area are,

dN=ρ(1cm2)=6.5X103

Answer is 6.5X103
