Question

If there is a 5% sugar solution then naturally the remaining 95% of the solution will be water. So if we put a cell into this solution aren't the water moleculessupposed to move into the cell and not out of the cell since the concentration of water is higher outside the cell?

Solution

Dear student,

5% sugar solution is lesser concentrated when compared to the cell. That means the cell is inside a hypotonic solution. Due to osmosis water will move from high water concentration region to low water concentration region through semi permeable membrane. So here the water will move from the solution into the cell. This will result in swelling and bursting of the cell.
