Algae are small microscopic, aquatic plant like organism, they contain chlorophyll and therefore they are able to prepare their own food through photosynthesis. Phytoplanktons, a single celled form of algae are photosynthetic organisms they are food to many aquatic organisms mainly to small and large fishes therefore it algae are vital for productivity as they are at the base of marine food web. Hence "if there were no algae there would be no fish in the sea".
