Question

If this solution were diluted to 10 times its volume, what would be the pH? (write the value to the nearest integer)

Open in App
Solution

On diluting the solution 10 times,
[HCOOH]=0.005,[HCOONa]=0.006
HCOOHH++HCOO
0.005 0 0 (Initially)
0.005(1α) 0.005α 0.005α+0.006 (At equilibrium)
Ka=1.8×104=(0.005α+0.006)(0.005α)0.005(1α)
0.005α2+0.006α1α=1.8×104
27.77α2+34.33α1=0
α=0.0285
[H+]=0.005α=1.425×104
pH=3.846
Hence, the answer to nearest integer is 4.
