Compounds composed of highly polarising cations and highly polarisable anions have a significant covalent character in their bonding. For example, LiI is most covalent among alkali metal halides. Small sized Li+ ion is highly polarising and large sized I− ion is highly polarisable. Due to this, the electrons are drawn from the anion to the cation by electrostatic attraction due to which the electron density between two ions is increased and the resulting bond becomes covalent in nature.
