Li+ is the smallest cation among alkali metals with highest ionization energy but Li+ is strongest reducing agent in aqueous medium due to higher heat of hydration. Among alkali metals, Li is hydrated to maximum extent. Hence, the energy released during hydration of lithium is maximum. Thus, the ionization energy is more than compensated by hydration energy. This results in higher oxidation potential of lithium which results in greater reducing power for lithium.
