Solution
When Cl2 gas is passed into a mixture containing Br− and I− and CHCl3, I2(violet) first apears in CHCl3 layer. The decreasing order for the reducing power of halide ions is I−>Br−>Cl−>F− Thus, chlorine can displace bromine and iodine fromn their salts. Silmilarly bromine can displace iodine from its salt. 2I−+Cl2⟶2Cl−+I2 2Br−+Cl2⟶2Cl−+Br2 Thus, I2 is formed in preference of Br2 . Iodine is violet in colour. Hence, CHCl3 layer appears violet. Hence, the given statement is true.
