When two bulbs (assume to have same power rating) are connected in series, the applied voltage will get distributed equally and both of them will have half of the applied voltage as voltage drop across each of them. Due to this, they will glow with less brightness. Where as when only one bulb is connected, the voltage drop across the bulb is equal to the applied voltage. Therefore the bulb glows with more brightness as there is no distribution of applied voltage.
