Question

If two masses are equal and made of the same material, how will the force of attraction vary with separation?

Open in App
Solution

  1. By Newton's universal law of gravitation we have ,F=GMmr2 where M and m are the masses of the bodies, r is the separation between them and G is the universal gravitational constant.
  2. If two masses are equal and made of the same material, then, the force of attraction due to gravity is inversely proportional to the square of the separation between the two bodies.
  3. Hence, the force of attraction will be inversely proportional to the square of the separation between the bodies.
