Question

If two solutions of 5% glucose and 10% glucose are kept in a trough separated by a semipermeable membrane what will you observe after an hour?

Solution

Osmosis:

  1. Osmosis is the movement of solvent molecules from the region of lower solute concentration to the region of higher solute concentration to maintain an equilibrium in the concentration.
  2. Movement of solvent ion occurs through the semipermeable membrane.
  3. Here the low concentration is that of 5% glucose solution and hence the water will move from this region to the side with 10% glucose concentration.
  4. This will increase the level of water in the other side resulting in the decrease in concentration from 10% glucose and increase in concentration from 5% glucose level in the solution.

Final Answer: Therefore, after an hour there will be a higher level of solvent towards the side of the 10% glucose solution.
