Gravitational potential can be expressed as

P=mgh

where m is the mass, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and h is the height of the body.

Upon substituting their units we get,

P=kg×ms-2×m

=kgm2s-2

Therefore, the dimensional formula is M1L2T-2.

Step 3: Dimensional formula in terms of vmt

Let P=vxmytz

⇒M1L2T-2=ms-1xkgysz

⇒M1L2T-2=mxs-xkgysz

⇒M1L2T-2=mxs-x+zkgy

⇒M1L2T-2=MyLxT-x+z

∴y=1,x=2,-x+z=-2

⇒z=-2+2=0

∴P=v2m1t0

Hence, if velocity (v), time (t), and mass (m) are taken as fundamental quantities, then the dimensional formula for gravitational potential would be v2m1t0.
