Question

If we divide 9 by 2 on a number line, then what will be the remainder?

Open in App
Solution

Division is repeated subtraction. Therefore, to divide 9 by 2 we have to subtract 2 repeatedly.

On a number line, subtracting 2 means taking backward jumps with each jump covering 2 units. (0.5 mark)

As shown on the number line we can have maximum 4 jumps and we will reach 1. We cannot jump backward further. (2 marks)

Therefore, when 9 is divided by 2 we will get 1 as remainder. (0.5 mark)
