The whole 4" cube can be exactly cut into smaller cubes of 2" dimension. Let there be x small cubes of 2" dimensions, then by equating the volumes:
4×4×4=x×2×2×2
x=8
Thus, there are maximum of 8 cubes of dimension 2" cut from a cube of dimension 8". hence, the 12" cubes will 0.
