Let us subtract $x^{2} + 3 x - 8$ from $x^{2} + x + 6$ as follows:

( $x^{2} + x + 6) - (x^{2} + 3 x - 8)$
= $x^{2} + x + 6 - x^{2} - 3 x + 8$
