Question

If x=1,y=2 is a solution of equation a^2 x +ay =3,then find the value of a

Open in App
Solution

The given equation is

a2 x + ay = 3

Since x = 1; y = 2 is a solution of the above equation so it must satisfy it.

Put x = 1 and y = 2 in the above equation we get

a2 + 2a = 3

⇒ a2 + 2a - 3 = 0

⇒ a2 + 3a - a - 3 = 0

⇒ a (a + 3) - 1(a + 3) = 0

⇒ (a - 1) (a + 3) = 0

⇒ a - 1 = 0 or a + 3 = 0

a = 1 or a = -3
