Given (x – 1/x) = 1/2
Squaring on both the sides, we get
(x – 1/x)² = (1/2)²
x² – 2 + (1/x²) = 1/4
x² + (1/x²) = (1/4) + 2
= (9/4)
∴ 4x² + (4/x²) = 9
