$(x^{2} - y^{2})$ = $(x - y) (x + y) = 18$

$(x + y) = \frac{18}{3} = 6$ --------------------I

$(x - y) = 3$ -----------------------------II

Solving equations I and II, we get $x = \frac{9}{2}$ and $y = \frac{3}{2}$
