Question

If x=3+232;y=323+2 then find x2+y2

Open in App
Solution

x=3+232
Rationalising the denominator, we get
x=3+232×3+23+2
x=3+2+2632
x=5+26
Again y=323+2
Rationalising the denominator, we get
y=323+2×3232
y=3+22632
y=526
We know that (x+y)2=x2+y2+2xy
x2+y2=(x+y)22xy
Substituting the values of x and y we have
x2+y2=(5+26+526)22(5+26)(526)
=1022(254×6)
=1002(2524)
=1002(1)
=1002=98
x2+y2=98
