Question

If x is the temperature (inoC) at which liquid H2O will be in equilibrium with its vapours (ΔHandΔS for vaporization are 40.7kJmol1 and 0.11kJmol1K1 respectively) , then x is:

Solution

ΔG=ΔHTΔS
At equilibrium, ΔG=0
The equation reduces to,
ΔH=TΔS
T=ΔHΔS=40.70.11=370 K=97oC
Hence, x=97 is the answer.
