Question

If you are in a small boat in a swimming pool and there is a bowling ball in the boat as well, and you toss the ball into the pool. Does the water level in the pool raise, lower, or stay the same? Why?

Solution

Dear Student ,
When the ball is in the boat all of its weight is supported by the displacement of water - the water level is high. When dropped, the ball sinks to the bottom, where some of its weight is supported by reaction force from the ground, and not from displaced water. With less water being displaced the water level will be lower.
