Solution

Chemical change:

  • Chemical change when a substance combines with another substance it forms a new substance, this phenomenon is called a chemical change.
  • Chemical changes are irreversible changes, therefore it cannot be reversed
  • When iron reacts with water and atmospheric oxygen a reddish-brown layer of hydrated iron oxide is formed which is called rust.
  • 4Fe(s)Iron+3O2(g)Oxygen+xH2O(g)Moisture2Fe2O3.xH2O(s)FerricHydroxide
  • This is a chemical change as a new compound is formed.

Hence, rusting of iron is a chemical change.
