Question

If you say that a certain process 'fixes nitrogen' what does this mean? Which natural process in the atmosphere fixes nitrogen?

Solution

Nitrogen fixation is the process in which atmospheric nitrogen (gaseous nitrogen) is converted into nitrogen compounds. These nitrogen compounds are then utilised by the living organisms. In atmosphere, lightening generates high temperatures, which leads to the reaction of oxygen and nitrogen to produce nitrogen oxides. This process is responsible for natural fixation of nitrogen.
