There are 4 friends and each of them gets 12 candies.
So, total number of candies = 4 × 12

0 4×1 2 4 8

Therefore, the number of candies you had = 48


Alternately,
We know, multiplication is repeated addition.
So, 4 × 12 is nothing but 12 + 12 + 12 + 12.
But,
12 + 12 + 12 + 12
= 10 + 2 + 10 + 2 + 10 + 2 + 10 + 2
= 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2
= 40 + 8
= 48
