Question

If z=a+ib lies in third quadrant, then z¯z also lies in third quadrant if

(a) a>b>0
(b) a<b<0
(c) b<a<0
(d) b>a>0

Open in App
Solution

Since, z=a+ib lies in third quadrant.
a<0 and b<0 ....(1)

Now,
z¯z=a+ib¯a+ib =a-iba+ib =a-iba+ib×a-iba-ib =a2+i2b2-2abia2-i2b2 =a2-b2-2abia2+b2

Since, z¯z also lies in third quadrant.
a2-b2<0(a-b)(a+b)<0a-b>0 and a+b<0a>b ....(2)

From (1) and (2),
b<a<0

Hence, the correct option is (c).
