Solution

Ethane can be oxidized as follows:

1. A mixture of ethane and oxygen in the ratio 9:1 by volume is compressed to about 120 atm pressure and passed over copper tubes at 475 K, to form ethanol.

2C2H6+O22CH3CH2OH

2. When a mixture of ethane and oxygen is passed through heated MoO, the mixture is oxidized to ethanal.

C2H6+O2CH3CHO+H2O

3. Ethane reacts with oxygen at 120 atm pressure and 475 K temperature to form ethanol which is then oxidized to ethanoic acid in the presence of platinum catalyst at 300o C.

2C2H6+O22CH3CH2OH
CH3CH2OH+O2CH3COOH+H2O
