In a test tube take a small amount of solid sodium carbonate ( $N a_{2} C O_{3}$ ). To this add a few drops of hydrochloric acid. A colourless and odourless gas will be evolved which indicates the occurence of a chemical reaction. This gas will turn the lime water milky when passed through it.
