illustrate how copper metal can give different products on reaction with HNO3.
The products of the reaction of copper with HNO3 depends upon the concentration of HNO3 used
(i) Copper metal reacts with dilute HNO3 to form nitrogen (II) oxide (NO).
3Cu+8HNO3(dilute)→3Cu(NO3)2+2NO+4H2O
(ii) Copper metal reacts with conc. HNO3 to form nitrogen (IV) oxide or nitrogen dioxide NO2.
Cu+4HNO3(conc.)→Cu(NO3)2+2NO2+2H2O
