Question

illustrate the different types of mixtures with an experiment.

Open in App
Solution

There are 2 types of mixtures - Homogeneous Mixture and Heterogeneous Mixture

Homogeneous Mixture - Those mixtures in which the substances are uniformly mixed without any clear boundary of separation are called homogeneous mixtures.

Heterogeneous Mixture - Those mixtures in which the substances have uniform composition and also have visible boundaries of separation between the constituents are called homogeneous mixtures.
Let's perform an experiment to distinguish these 2 mixtures.

  1. Let's divide the students of a class into the groups W, X, Y and Z.
  2. Group W takes a beaker containing 100mL of water and one spatula full of Copper Sulphate (CuSO4) powder.
  3. Group X takes 100mL water and two spatulas full of Copper Sulphate (CuSO4) powder in another beaker.
  4. Groups Y and groups Z can take any amounts of Copper Sulphate (CuSO4), Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) and Common Salt (NaCl) and mix the given components to form a mixture.
  5. Mention the observations based on the uniformity in colour and texture and compare the colour of the solutions of the two groups.

Observation -

  1. Groups W and groups X have obtained a mixture which has a uniform composition throughout the process. Such mixtures are called homogeneous mixtures or solutions. Though both the groups, i.e., W and X have obtained Copper Sulphate (CuSO4) solution in which the intensity of the colour of the solutions is different.
  2. Groups Y and groups Z have obtained mixtures, which contain physically distinct parts and have non-uniform compositions. Such mixtures are called heterogeneous mixtures.

Final Conclusion -
A mixture which has a uniform composition throughout is called a homogeneous mixture. A mixture which has variable composition throughout is called a heterogeneous mixture.
