Question

Illustrate the law of definite proportion from the following data
1) 0.16 gram of sulphur produces 112 ml of SO2 at ntp
2)sulphur dioxide obtained by the decomposition of sulphate contains 50% of sulphur

Solution

dear student
this is the answer to your question
law of definite proportions says that a chemical compound always has same elements combined together in a same definite proportions by mass
in case 1
224 ml of oxygen at ntp weighs 32g so 112 ml oxygen at ntp will weigh .16 grams
thus ratio of oxygen and sulphur will be 16:16 that is 1:1
in case 2
SO2 on decomposition gives S and O2
1 mole of SO2 produces 1 mole sulphur
64g SO2produces 32g sulphur this means 50% sulphur is produces
if we take 2 mole SO2 that is 128g SO2 it will produce 64g sulphur
thus if we take any mass 50% of sulphur will be obtained
thus bith these conditions follow law of definite proportions
